My experience with beer began and evolved along the same lines as, what I would guess is, the vast majority of people. I went to college and started off drinking the swill that is American mass produced beer. Don’t get me wrong, the swill has it’s uses when it comes to drinking. For example, you don’t take a 4 pack of Sam Smith Imperial Stout to a tailgate unless you want a serious beatdown. It wasn’t until my brother started inviting me in to his circle of friends that I really began to branch out in to better beers.
Once I was introduced to quality there was no stopping the change in taste and attitude toward beer. It didn’t take me long to move from lagers and ales to porters and stouts, and then from porters and stouts to IPAs. That’s where I am today. Although I still have a great appreciation for all of my past phases of beer, I am stuck on IPA’s. I have been fortunate enough to find a group of my own friends who also enjoy drinking and discussing beer. Over the years we have sampled, categorized, described and rated some of the best beers in our area.
